Supporting the Fisherman's Mission
The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen began through the insights and efforts of just one man, Ebenezer J Mather. In 1881 Mather visited the fishing fleet on the Dogger Bank . "Fish appeared on my table, for aught I knew it might have grown on the Fishmonger's slab! Let those who speak of the price of fish spend one night aboard a trawling smack. You must be prepared for the grey wilderness of a floating ocean, swept by winds as cold and pitiless as the hand of death!" - Ebenezer J Mather
He was shocked and appalled by the deplorable and degrading conditions in which fishermen worked and lived. He felt something had to be done to help alleviate their plight. His response was to found the National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen. The casualty rate in the 19th century fishing industry was appallingly high, medical provision absent and fishermen were prey to the continental grog ships, known as 'copers'.
